Start with the kind of payment you need
Foreign visitors can follow Alipay's current instructions to link an eligible overseas bank card in their own name for purchases at participating merchants in mainland China. Adding a card does not mean every transaction will work. Eligibility and authorization depend on the account, card issuer and payment context. This planning guide draws on official information checked on October 4, 2026; it does not confirm approval for an individual account.
Paying a restaurant or shop is different from transferring money to a friend, sending a red packet or funding a wallet balance. Alipay's overseas-card purchase agreement excludes non-consumption uses such as transfers, investments and cash withdrawals. When someone presents a QR code, confirm that it is a supported merchant checkout. The code's color or appearance cannot establish whether your foreign card will work.
Prepare your phone number and bank verification before departure
Install the official Alipay app through a legitimate app store and follow the registration flow shown for your region. Alipay's official registration page directs users with non-mainland phone numbers to register in the app. Use a number that can receive verification messages during your trip and check its country code. Before changing SIMs or buying a data-only travel plan, confirm whether your original number will still receive messages. Having mobile data does not automatically solve account verification.
Find the bank-card management and add-card options in the app, then enter your own card details as requested. Check the spelling and order of your name against your passport, account information and bank records, including middle names. Complete the identity and bank checks required by the current screen. Menu labels can change with the app version and language. Submit identity documents, full card details and verification codes only through the official process, never to an unknown intermediary.
Ask your issuer whether the card can make cross-border online purchases, whether its verification method will work abroad and whether you need to enable a security setting. Save the bank's official support channel and arrange another source of funds. A supported card-network brand does not establish eligibility for every issuer, product or country of issuance. Follow the app, applicable agreement and your bank's actual decision.

Your first purchase: check the recipient before confirming
After arrival, test the basic payment route with a small merchant purchase you actually need. Ask staff whether their checkout supports Alipay payments funded by overseas cards. When you scan, inspect the merchant name, currency and amount, then select the linked card. When a merchant scans your payment code, confirm the amount and funding source first. Follow the actual checkout screen for either method.
After confirming, check the order status in Alipay and ask the merchant to verify receipt. Network delays, phone notifications and bank authorization alerts can arrive at different times. A single alert may not establish the final outcome. If a payment remains pending, inspect the order before trying again to avoid duplicate charges. Each traveler should check their own account; one person's success does not validate every account in a group.
Before relying on a transport code, reservation service or mini program, separately check its document, phone-number and funding requirements. A successful basic merchant payment does not establish access to every transport product or third-party service. Allow time for setup and verification before your first use, rather than doing it shortly before a train departure or park entry.
Check fees, limits and refunds for the actual transaction
Read the service charges and restrictions shown at checkout, and check your card's foreign-transaction and conversion terms. Platform charges, issuer fees and exchange-rate conversion are separate items. The final bank posting may differ from the initial alert. Historical fee waivers, rates and annual limits should not be treated as universal current rules. Do not split purchases to evade limits. For a large expense, ask the merchant about supported payment methods in advance.
Confirm hotel deposits and preauthorizations separately from ordinary purchases. Before check-in, ask whether the hotel accepts your physical card, how it handles the deposit, when it releases authorization and how refunds are processed. Keep the receipt and order reference. For a refund, first ask the original merchant to confirm its status, then check through Alipay and your bank. Processing times and currency differences depend on the transaction; immediate repayment or an identical converted amount cannot be promised.

Work through a decline without repeated attempts
Record the error message without exposing private information. Check connectivity, login and verification status, then see whether the intended card is selectable and the merchant supports the transaction. If the app says an overseas card cannot fund a transfer, switch to a supported merchant payment or your backup. If the bank declines authorization, use its official channel to investigate; reinstalling the app may not address the cause.
Avoid repeatedly submitting a payment whose status is uncertain. Inspect your order history and the merchant's receipt record before changing methods. If needed, use cash or another eligible card. Give official support the order reference, time, amount and error text, then follow its process for any additional information. Redact passport details, card numbers, account details and contact information from screenshots. Never provide a payment password or verification code to someone asking for it.
Arrange cash and a physical-card backup
The People's Bank of China's payment-facilitation information covers cards, mobile payments and cash. Set aside some renminbi cash for contingencies, including denominations suitable for small purchases. Use legitimate banks, exchange providers or ATMs. Check the machine's displayed card-network acceptance, fees and your issuer's withdrawal rules. A card that funds an app purchase does not necessarily work at a particular ATM.
Before booking a hotel, arranging a car or visiting a more remote area, ask the provider which methods it accepts. Physical overseas-card acceptance depends on the terminal and card network. One hotel's acceptance does not establish acceptance at other businesses. Prepare backup cash, a physical card and bank contact details in case your phone runs out of power, disappears or loses connectivity. A power bank and accommodation details available offline are useful additions.
Questions visitors ask before using Alipay
Do I need a Chinese bank card? The overseas-card purchase service offers another payment route, subject to current account, card and merchant eligibility. A short visit does not mean you must open a mainland bank account to follow an old tutorial. It also does not establish access to every Alipay feature.
Can I transfer money to a Chinese friend? The overseas-card merchant purchase service does not cover personal transfers or other non-consumption uses. For shared bills, agree in advance on separate payments to the merchant or another legitimate method for which everyone is eligible. Do not borrow an unknown person's account.
Must I top up first? Choose the funding source shown for your linked-card purchase; do not assume a wallet top-up is required. An old Tour Pass or prepaid tutorial may describe a different service. Check the current product name, conditions and fees before using it.
How do I know I am ready? Complete registration, required verification and card preparation before departure. After arrival, complete one real merchant purchase and make sure cash or a physical-card backup is available. That test confirms only the route you tested; check eligibility again for a new payment context.
