Establish genuine third-country transit first
The 240-hour exemption concerns eligible travelers passing through mainland China to a third country or region. A stay under ten days is not enough by itself. Write down the actual places immediately before and after the mainland segment, then check your ordinary passport with at least three months' validity, confirmed onward ticket, ports and permitted areas. Information was checked on October 4, 2026; this guide does not guarantee admission.
A route from A through China to a different B is a starting point for assessment. Returning from China to the same A does not become qualifying transit because the visit lasts only a few nights. Passport nationality and travel locations are separate checks. Journeys involving regions such as Hong Kong or Macao still require assessment of the complete transport arrangement.
Use the latest nationality and port information
The NIA's August 20, 2026 information identifies 57 eligible countries and 65 designated ports across 24 provincial-level areas. Older pages may show 55 countries or 60 ports. Check publication dates and current attachments together rather than mixing versions. This guide does not reproduce a global list.
American ordinary-passport holders can check this route against the current official list, subject to all other conditions. British, Australian and Singaporean visitors may also have other exemption routes to compare. Malaysian or Thai visitors must not infer eligibility from another Southeast Asian country's inclusion; start with the bilateral arrangement applicable to their own passport.

Permitted areas shape the itinerary
Consult the official table of ports and permitted areas for the intended arrival port and every planned destination. Permission does not automatically cover the whole country. List cities, attractions and connecting transport, and ask official channels about any uncertain area before booking.
Cross-region travel depends on the current permitted scope and your actual permission. Being able to buy a train ticket does not establish immigration compliance. Save the instructions provided at entry and confirm the expiry and geographic scope. A travel adviser can arrange transport but cannot approve an immigration permission.
Record optional attractions separately from required entry and departure conditions. Before adding another city, check permitted areas and transport, then admission. When changing accommodation, keep registration and address records aligned. Retain actual confirmed onward tickets and dates rather than substituting an unpaid flight idea.
Check onward transport before committing
Prepare a ticket with confirmed date, seat and destination and check its name and passport details against the whole journey. Waitlists and tentative plans are different from confirmed transport. With separate tickets or multiple airlines, ask the carrier what proof it needs for boarding and retain the full orders offline.
Check eligibility for the onward destination, including its visa and transit requirements. China's transit arrangement does not solve another country's entry rules. Allow border, road and weather buffers before departure rather than relying on the final available flight. Reassess all conditions if onward transport changes or is canceled.
Application and inspection at the port
Carry your original ordinary passport, onward tickets, accommodation address and genuine itinerary, and follow the port's instructions. Before travel, consult NIA channels or 12367 about an uncertain route and ask your airline about boarding documentation. Advice obtained in advance is not an admission permit.
Allow time for the process and explain your onward destination accurately. Complete entry information truthfully. An online arrival-card confirmation is not approval for transit admission: information submission, airline boarding checks and border inspection are separate stages. Group members with different passports may need different entry routes.

Keep 24-hour and 240-hour rules separate
The official 24-hour policy has its own conditions involving valid documents, confirmed onward international transport, the time limit and staying within restricted port areas. Leaving those areas requires a temporary entry permit. The 240-hour route separately specifies eligible nationalities, ports and areas. Do not combine them into a general right to leave an airport.
For a short connection, establish whether collecting baggage, changing terminals or checking in again requires leaving the restricted area. The carrier and airport explain transport arrangements; immigration determines the necessary permission. An earlier airside transfer does not validate a later journey with a different airport or ticket structure.
Registration and disrupted departures
Complete accommodation registration and retain contact details. Hotels handle the relevant registration; for a friend's home or other non-hotel accommodation, check the nationwide online service expanded from September 21, 2026, and its in-person alternative. A short transit visit does not remove registration obligations. Check requirements when changing accommodation.
If disruption creates an overstay risk, promptly contact local exit-entry authorities or 12367 and follow their instructions. Keep cancellation and communication records; do not assume disruption automatically adds another 240 hours. Leave time to approach your departure port and verify transport instead of filling every remaining hour with sightseeing.
Answers to common misunderstandings
Can I visit China and return to my departure country? A short return itinerary does not establish third-country transit. Check a general exemption or visa. Can I travel nationwide? Follow the currently permitted areas and the permission issued to you.
Does 240 hours provide ten full sightseeing days? The NIA's applicable-condition notice states that the visa-free stay begins at midnight on the day after entry. Follow the final deadline given in your port permission, allowing for transport and processing. Ask about your precise arrival and departure dates instead of deciding the deadline by adding ten days yourself.
Can I change the onward ticket? First check whether the change affects third-country transit, confirmed onward travel or permitted stay. For a longer or more flexible holiday, assess a suitable visa or another exemption for which you qualify.
