Connect immigration, communication, transport and accommodation
For a first arrival in mainland China, prepare a sequence: complete immigration, restore contact with your providers, find confirmed transport and complete accommodation registration. Start with documents and genuine orders, then choose apps. Airports, cards and devices differ, so these are checks rather than guarantees of a particular service. Official information was checked on October 4, 2026.
Keep your original passport, visa or applicable exemption information, transport orders and accommodation's Chinese address accessible. Save offline copies and essential paper details for a dead battery or connection failure. Keep the full document bundle private and provide sensitive details only when legitimately required.
A week before departure: confirm every traveler and segment
Check the issuing country and type of each passport, not residence or departure location. General exemptions and third-country transit are different routes. Singaporean, Malaysian and Thai travelers can check their respective bilateral arrangements; British and Australian travelers should inspect current unilateral conditions. Americans and others must assess their own visa or qualifying transit route.
Check international and onward requirements, ticket names and passport details. After passport replacement, update bookings and accounts tied to the previous number. Confirm arrival time, genuine guest details, late check-in, passport registration, address and payment with the accommodation provider. A building photograph does not establish these arrangements.

Before boarding: test numbers, payments and offline records
Keep the number used for bank and payment verification usable. A travel data plan may not provide a local number or SMS. Ask about receiving messages on your original number in China and associated charges. Install the official apps you need and complete available registration and identity checks in advance.
Prepare renminbi cash or an accepted physical card as backup, and check cross-border purchase and withdrawal terms. App payment still depends on the account, merchant and transaction. Use legitimate exchange services and retain bank support details. Save accommodation, meeting-point, carrier and home-country embassy contacts offline, including Chinese place names where useful.
At immigration: provide accurate information and allow time
The NIA provides online foreigner arrival-card channels, with on-site devices or paper options for travelers unable to use them online. Enter genuine passport, purpose and accommodation information and check any applicable exemption from completing the card. Submission does not establish admission; follow inspection instructions.
Explain the actual purpose and onward plans, showing orders if requested. Independent holidays, family visits and mixed business trips may need different supporting information. Complete required checks even if your arrival is delayed; notify providers so they can adjust transport.
Outside the airport: restore contact and use legitimate transport
Confirm usable data, calls or another contact method before reporting to your accommodation or transfer provider. Public Wi-Fi may need verification. Shanghai airports have published a passport-login option, but other airports may differ. For a local SIM, ask an official operator or service point about documents, plans and device compatibility. Avoid a stranger's registered SIM.
For a booked transfer, match the person and vehicle against your confirmation. Use official public-transport information or the airport's legitimate taxi queue. Verify the Chinese destination address and charging method, including branches with similar names. An unsolicited person's screenshot is not a reason to abandon a confirmed arrangement.

Register accommodation: hotels and private homes differ
Hotels must handle foreign-guest registration under the relevant rules. Present your actual passport and confirm registration with reception. Payment completion does not establish registration completion. Resolve differences between the booker and actual guests before arrival, and ask how to retain the accommodation record.
For non-hotel accommodation, the visitor or host must register within 24 hours. Online processing expanded nationwide on September 21, 2026, through NIA channels, with in-person registration retained. Before staying with friends or in another residence, agree who submits it and save the successful result. If submission fails, promptly use the officially advised alternative.
On the first evening: prepare for practical failures
Confirm next-day reservations, departure stations and transport separately, allowing time for first-time identity checks and station walking. If connectivity or payment remains unresolved, prioritize essential contact and transport, then optional apps. Leave room to rest after a late arrival.
If your phone disappears, use paper details to contact accommodation, your bank and operator and follow official account-blocking procedures. For passport loss, contact police and your embassy, then check Chinese document procedures. A canceled departure needs carrier action; a risk to permitted stay also needs exit-entry advice. Buying another ticket alone may not solve identity issues.
Your final arrival checks
Before departure, confirm documents and entry route, accommodation and transfer, verification access, backup funds and offline addresses. After landing, confirm completed immigration, working contact, correct transport and registration.
Is mobile payment enough? It handles only some spending; documents, transport and communication still matter. Does a short stay require registration? Follow the applicable accommodation rules. Does everyone need a local number? Requirements vary by service; buying a SIM does not guarantee every account will work.
