Check your device and the service before buying an eSIM

For mainland China, compare home-carrier roaming, a compatible travel eSIM and an official local SIM. The suitable choice depends on model, purchase region, carrier lock, destinations and whether you need calls or messages. An eSIM-capable phone does not support every local service, and internet access does not resolve every verification requirement. Information was checked on October 4, 2026.

Ask about mainland coverage, compatibility, validity start, data, speed restrictions and top-ups. Distinguish a travel data eSIM, local phone number and roaming on your existing number. A data-only plan may not include calls or SMS. Identify where banking and app verification messages will be sent before choosing a plan.

Model and purchase region both matter

Check the precise model and carrier restrictions, then confirm compatibility with the manufacturer and provider. Apple's official information distinguishes mainland local eSIM service from international travel service. Their compatibility conditions should not be mixed. Other brands require their own official documentation.

Before changing lines, check available SIM slots, unlocking and installation conditions. Verify default data, call and SMS settings for dual-line use. Do not casually delete your home eSIM: restoration may require the original carrier. Ask about reinstalling, replacing devices and accidental deletion, and keep activation information secure.

Prepare charging, any SIM tool and account-recovery methods. If activation uses a QR code, check how to install it on the same phone and ask the provider about alternatives if needed. Back up essential information and retain the order reference. If compatibility fails at arrival, prioritize an eligible roaming or official physical-SIM alternative.

Ask the same questions of each option

For roaming, ask your home carrier about coverage, daily or total charges, tethering, renewal and call or SMS costs. For a travel eSIM, check partner networks, required roaming settings, activation timing, installation limits and expiry. For a local SIM, ask about passport registration, calls, messages, contract duration and cancellation.

Signals can vary on rail journeys, in mountain areas and inside buildings. No plan guarantees complete coverage. Explain your destinations and essential-contact dates and save official support details. Choose an option you can maintain yourself; consider a local number separately for services that require one.

Keep access to your original verification number

Payment, banking and railway accounts may need SMS, email or issuer verification. Data service does not replace the channel already tied to an account. Before departure, confirm whether your original number can receive messages in China, whether roaming must be enabled and associated charges.

Depending on your device and carriers, you may keep the original line for essential messages and use another for data. Check which line actually supplies data to avoid unintended roaming costs. Make account-number changes through official procedures before travel, rather than borrowing an unknown number during an urgent transaction.

Test actual use after arrival

After activation, test data, necessary messages, maps, accommodation contact and registered apps. If calls are included, check local dialing conditions. Retain the activation email, provider name and order reference offline.

For missing service, check activation, expiry, the selected data line and the provider's roaming or access-point instructions. Follow official support rather than changing every setting or deleting the plan. Ask whether reinstalling is possible first. Use a legitimate service point or available Wi-Fi for essential contact and retain alternative transport and payment arrangements.

Do not assume access to every familiar website

Mainland China's network environment may differ from home. Coverage in China does not establish access to every social platform, map, work system or website. Ask about the services you need and prepare lawful communication and offline alternatives. This guide does not promise unrestricted access from any plan or routing method.

Avoid dependence on one platform for essential information: save the Chinese accommodation address, phone number, train and station details, meeting times, translation phrases and documents. Working travelers should check approved connectivity and data-security arrangements with their organization.

Local SIMs and public Wi-Fi

Use an official operator or authorized service point and provide required valid passport information for registration. Shanghai's government lists operator and airport channels, but current locations, hours and plans need checking. Confirm registration in your own name, balance, renewal, expiry and loss procedures.

Public Wi-Fi may require document or number verification. Follow the venue's official process and avoid unknown pages requesting sensitive details. Do not install unexplained certificates or enter payment credentials on an unverified hotspot. If your phone is lost, contact operators and account providers; a new SIM does not automatically sign out the old device.

Questions to put directly to the provider

Ask whether your precise model and purchase region are supported; which mainland networks cover your destinations; whether calls, SMS and a number are included; when validity begins; and how speed limits, sharing, renewal, refunds and activation support work. Retain the answers with your order.

Must I use eSIM? Roaming and local SIMs are alternatives. Can data receive bank SMS? Check whether SMS is included and which number the bank uses. Will every foreign website work? No guarantee applies; prepare tested services and offline alternatives.
