A foreign passport can be used, but prepare identity details first

Eligible valid passports can be used for China Railway bookings through 12306. Its English platform specifies valid foreign passports usable under the relevant regulations. Prepare account and passenger identity details before choosing dates and trains. Login, verification, payment and station checks are separate stages. Information was checked on October 4, 2026.

Nationality affects entry into China; railway preparation still requires a check for every passenger. Enter names and document details exactly as the current form requires, avoiding nicknames or substituted identities. After passport replacement, check how to update information tied to the old document.

Step one: check account and passenger verification

Use the official site or app, choose the relevant language and document type, and check account-holder and passenger records separately. Complete required identity and contact verification with genuine documents. Interface labels and assessment times may change; an old tutorial does not guarantee the same process.

If verification is incomplete or the name format is unclear, follow official instructions. Do not create false profiles or use another identity. In China, take the actual document to station staff for advice where needed. Allow time for first-time processing; services depend on official rules and station arrangements.

For a group, keep a private checklist matching each issued ticket to the actual passport. Each traveler should review identity and dates even when someone else books. Verify children, separate trains and separately issued tickets individually, and agree arrival time and a reunion point in case anyone becomes separated.

Step two: identify the actual stations

A city may have several railway stations. Check the station name and calculate transport from your accommodation to departure and from arrival to your next stop. A shorter train journey may not give the shortest total trip if the station is farther away or a scenic-area transfer remains.

Review dates, train number, departure and arrival times, class, connections and stations. Check the arrival date for overnight journeys. Inspect assigned seats rather than assuming one order guarantees adjacent seats. For connections, confirm whether you change stations and allow for luggage and transfer procedures.

Step three: verify issued tickets after payment

Use a payment method currently offered by the official platform and review the order conditions. After payment, return to the order and check issuance for every traveler. Availability, a payment screen, bank authorization and a successfully issued ticket are different states. Check the order before purchasing again after a connection failure. Save train, seat, date and station details offline.

With a third-party agent, confirm the underlying railway ticket is actually issued, the identity used, itemized fees and change or refund channels. Waitlisting and advance booking requests do not guarantee tickets. If your preferred train is unavailable, consider other times, classes or transport, while preserving immigration and itinerary constraints.

On travel day: original documents and station checks

Carry the valid original passport used for booking and allow time for station transport, security, identity checks and walking to the gate. Follow local instructions for the appropriate document channel. If a machine cannot read your passport, show the original and genuine order to staff. Do not use another passenger's document.

12306's English FAQ states that an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt cannot be used as a ticket. A screenshot can assist an enquiry but does not replace the required identity document. Check displays for gate changes, note your carriage and seat and plan to handle your luggage through a large station.

Ask about luggage, children and assistance

Check current railway baggage size, weight, restricted-item and battery rules separately from airline rules. Ask official staff about large cases, mobility equipment or unusual items. Choose luggage you can manage and consider lifts, stairs and long connecting passages.

Check current age, identity and seat rules for children; an adult's ticket does not resolve every child's booking requirement. Travelers needing mobility equipment or other qualifying assistance can inspect 12306's special-passenger reservation service. Apply with genuine tickets and required evidence, considering each connection separately. Age alone does not guarantee every requested service.

Changes, refunds and disruption require confirmed outcomes

Use the original booking channel or an officially available alternative to check changes, refunds and destination changes. Charges and eligibility depend on current rules, ticket conditions and timing. Inspect the final result after submitting a request; clicking a button does not establish a new confirmed ticket. Check every passenger in a group.

If disruption affects a hotel, transfer or international flight, contact each relevant provider. Leave adequate margin before important international departures, potentially arriving in the departure city the previous evening. If disruption threatens permitted stay, contact exit-entry authorities as well as railway services.

Quick answers for foreign passengers

Can I travel with a photocopy after booking? Carry the required original valid document used for the ticket. Is a Chinese SIM always necessary? Check current account-verification requirements; phone access and passport verification are separate preparations.

What if the English platform does not accept my document? Confirm the supported document type and ask official channels about alternatives. Do not invent foreign-passport details. What if verification fails? Follow the official request for further information or staff assistance without assuming a guaranteed review time.

What remains after booking? Check identity, station, date, train, class and successful issuance for each person. Save the details, carry originals and review railway notices before departure.
