Check the passport you will actually use

Whether you need a visa for a holiday in China depends first on the issuing country and type of your passport, visit purpose and length of stay. Living in, or departing from, a visa-exempt country does not substitute for passport eligibility. General exemptions, bilateral agreements and 240-hour transit have different conditions. Identify the correct route before making nonrefundable bookings. Official information was checked on October 4, 2026; this guide cannot determine an individual's admission.

Check every traveler separately, including children. Family members may hold different nationalities. Record the passport details, planned dates, relevant official notice and policy expiry privately. A document copy can assist preparation but does not replace required originals.

Different travelers need different starting points

Singaporean, Malaysian and Thai ordinary-passport holders can start with their respective bilateral arrangements. Singapore's official information describes eligible stays of up to 30 days. The Chinese embassy's Malaysia FAQ describes the agreement effective July 17, 2025, including passport validity of at least six months, a maximum 30-day visit and a maximum 90 days within 180 days. Thailand's foreign ministry also identifies single-visit and cumulative limits. Do not apply one nationality's calculation instructions to everyone.

British ordinary-passport holders should check the foreign ministry's February 15, 2026 notice: the qualifying 30-day arrangement began February 17 and currently runs through December 31, 2026. Australians should consult the Chinese embassy's extension notice and conditions. Americans cannot borrow those unilateral arrangements. For a genuine transit through China, check the NIA's current 240-hour conditions against the entire route; a normal return holiday needs its own visa assessment.

Check the purpose, dates and entry point together

An exemption does not authorize every activity. Consult the applicable wording for tourism, business or family visits. Work, study, journalism and other activities requiring approval cannot be assumed eligible under tourism. Ask official immigration or consular channels about mixed business and leisure, volunteering or unusual documents, using your actual plans.

Check that your entry date falls within the policy's validity and how the final permitted day is calculated. Bilateral arrangements may include rolling cumulative limits; a short exit may not reset them. Keep a record of previous entries and the status used, then follow the nationality-specific official instructions. Seek clarification if the calculation is unclear.

If someone holds a temporary passport, emergency travel document or another unusual document, check whether that type is accepted under the applicable exemption. Ordinary-passport wording does not cover every document from the same issuing country. Give official advisers its exact type, validity and actual travel purpose, and arrange an appropriate visa where required before confirming transport.

Prepare documents that explain your real journey

Carry the applicable original passport and organize return or onward transport, accommodation addresses, itinerary and available-funds information for checks if requested. Requirements depend on the rule and inspection; no checklist guarantees admission. Save accommodation names and Chinese addresses offline. If visiting friends, retain genuine host contact details.

Confirm boarding requirements with the carrier, especially with separate tickets, passport replacement or third-country connections. Airline boarding and border admission are separate decisions. Check your eligibility to enter any onward country as well. Resolve a name or document mismatch before booking additional activities.

For journeys through Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan, check each segment's entry requirements separately from mainland China. Permission for one segment does not establish permission for all of them. Land, sea and air journeys also require checks of the actual port and carrier conditions. Put each segment's documents, transport and accommodation in one private checklist and confirm them before departure.

Use an appropriate alternative if the exemption does not fit

For a longer stay, excluded purpose, ineligible document or dates outside the announced period, check the appropriate visa procedure. Allow for documents, assessment and passport return without assuming a fixed approval time. Avoid packages promising guaranteed entry or fabricated travel documents.

The 240-hour route requires genuine transit to a third country or region, eligible ports and permitted areas. A short return trip to the same country or region does not become qualifying transit because it lasts under ten days. Check a suitable visa when that better matches the actual journey.

Accommodation and stay management still apply

Visa-exempt visitors still need accommodation registration. Hotels handle registration under the relevant rules; for other accommodation, the visitor or host must register within 24 hours of arrival. The NIA expanded online non-hotel registration nationwide from September 21, 2026, while retaining in-person channels. Confirm who will submit it and keep the completed record.

Before changing a journey, check effects on your permitted stay, purpose and area. A canceled flight does not automatically extend permission. Contact the local exit-entry authority or 12367 promptly if an overstay risk arises, and retain disruption evidence. Your embassy can assist with consular matters but cannot authorize a stay in China.

Questions before a visa-exempt trip

Can an American departing Singapore use Singapore's ordinary-passport exemption? Departure location does not substitute for nationality. Check the American passport and actual route. British visitors must also check the date, purpose and duration limits of their own notice.

What if my country is not mentioned here? Consult the Chinese mission responsible for your location and current NIA information. This guide provides a method and verified examples rather than a global list; omission is not a determination that you require a visa.

Does visa exemption guarantee admission? Eligibility checking is preparation for lawful border inspection. Carry genuine documents, a clear route and adjustment options, and review official notices again before departure.
