The short answer: use your passport and confirm the booking first
Foreign visitors can use the English booking route from the Palace Museum international website and register with a passport. Beijing’s official visitor FAQ confirms this route and says to bring the original document used for the reservation, using the manual inspection channel at the Meridian Gate. Check the date, visitor names and confirmed order status before treating the visit as fixed. A payment notification or an incomplete checkout screenshot does not establish admission.
The museum normally closes on Mondays, with public holiday and exceptional opening arrangements announced separately. A notice about one special Monday does not establish a general exception. This guide was checked on 4 October 2026; review current availability, prices, entry windows and gallery announcements for your own visit.
Prepare a visitor-by-visitor identity checklist
Prepare each traveller’s passport name, passport number and intended date. Use the name on the document rather than an informal English nickname. For middle names, spaces or surname order, follow the current field instructions and contact the official service if they remain unclear. Never substitute a Chinese identity number belonging to someone else.
Choose an email address or phone number you can access during the trip and inspect the booking language before entering details. Compare every record against the passport, paying attention to letters and numbers that look alike, the final digits and recently renewed documents. For children, older travellers or students, check the current eligibility and evidence requirements. An overseas student card or age alone does not establish a concession.

Start at the museum website, then follow its ticket link
Open the international museum website and use its Tickets or booking link to reach the current booking service. Recognising a link supplied by the museum is more useful than hunting for a button shown in an old tutorial. The Chinese museum website also directs visitors to official booking channels. A high search position, an advertisement or a promise of guaranteed availability does not make a seller an authorised museum outlet.
Check exactly what you are buying: main admission, an additional gallery or a separately reserved exhibition. Compare your exhibition wish list with current notices instead of assuming the main ticket includes everything. Read cancellation terms before paying. Save the order number and official order lookup route; after a network interruption, check whether an order exists before trying again.
Choose the date before arranging the rest of the day
Read opening announcements before selecting a date. Repairs or exhibition changes can affect a particular hall without closing the entire museum. With only two days in Beijing, secure an available museum date first and place flexible activities on the other day. Avoid paying for a non-refundable activity that depends on an unconfirmed museum booking.
Convert any current release time into your own time zone and set a reminder, then verify it on the live booking page. Some older official pages still contain previous booking-system or pandemic wording. Cross-check the international interface and latest notices rather than turning historical health-code or testing text into current travel requirements. Exceptional opening announcements apply only to the dates they specify.
Navigate to the Meridian Gate, and plan the exit separately
The museum uses a south-to-north visit direction: enter through the Meridian Gate and leave through the Gate of Divine Prowess or East Prosperity Gate. Save both the Chinese entrance name, 故宫博物院午门, and “Meridian Gate.” A general museum address can lead you to the northern side, where you cannot begin the visit. Allow time for the approach, security and document inspection rather than treating arrival nearby as entry.
If your approach crosses the Tiananmen area, check its separate current reservation and access requirements. A museum order does not automatically reserve another controlled area. Use the official map and current street instructions rather than following an unverified shortcut. Arrange the meeting or pickup point beside the exit you expect to use so your driver does not wait at the south while you emerge in the north.

Build one main route around one real interest
For a first visit, use the principal architectural axis to understand the layout, then add one gallery you genuinely want to see. Keep room for breaks and locating the exit. This is an editorial planning approach, not a museum package or a guarantee that particular spaces will be open. With only half a day, dropping a distant gallery can make the architecture and objects easier to appreciate than racing to photograph every sign.
Travellers interested in ceramics, painting, court life or architecture can instead build the route around a specific exhibition. Read labels and notice steps, thresholds and one-way movement; do not cross barriers to shorten the walk. Agree a clear regrouping point with children before separating. If mobility assistance is needed, consult official services in advance rather than assuming that broad courtyards make the whole visit step-free.
Handle sold-out dates, checkout errors and identity mistakes differently
If no places are available, check another date or select a different Beijing attraction; do not rely on a queue at the gate as a guaranteed last-minute solution. For a format error, inspect the document type and phone-country selection. Beijing’s official FAQ points overseas visitors towards the international reservation route. Buying an unfamiliar phone number or handing account access to a ticket hunter is not a sound troubleshooting step.
If payment appears to have gone through but no confirmed order is visible, inspect the original booking channel and transaction status before contacting official support with the order number, time and safe error wording. Name changes, renewed documents, cancellations and missed visits follow the current channel rules, with no promise of an on-site correction. Where only one companion cancels, distinguish partial from whole-order cancellation. Keep passport scans, full card details and verification codes out of public help groups.
A final check that covers the whole entry journey
Keep the original passport, confirmed order, date and entrance together on a private itinerary. Charge the phone and save an offline order reference and the Chinese entrance name. Prepare seasonal clothing, water and suitable walking shoes, checking the museum’s current security and visitor rules for bag contents. Resolve luggage arrangements before reaching the gate.
Keep the plan after the museum flexible. Crowds, gallery restrictions and your own interests can change the finishing time. For a train or flight later that day, count transport and security buffers separately; shorten the visit instead of shrinking the return margin. You are ready when each person has the correct document and confirmed booking, knows how to reach the Meridian Gate and understands the exit plan.
