Seven Days in Yunnan with Dali and Lijiang: Lake, Old Towns and an Optional Mountain

Use two bases for a week, leaving a transfer day and a genuinely optional Jade Dragon Snow Mountain visit alongside old-town and lakeside time.

The answer: two cities and an optional mountain day

Arrive in Dali on day one, use days two and three for the old town, lake or villages, transfer to Lijiang on day four, choose town and personal interests on days five and six, and depart on day seven. Two bases reduce luggage moves. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a possible day-six choice, not compulsory for everyone.

This original example assumes transport can fit that order and prioritises fewer places. If you must travel via Kunming in both directions, count those connections inside the week rather than assuming additional full sightseeing days there. This is a flexible itinerary; confirm reservations and opening conditions for your travel dates.

Dali arrival: choose between transport access, old town and lake

Map the hotel before arranging airport or station transfers. ‘Dali’ in its name does not establish a location near transport, inside the old town or beside the lake. Compare actual address, luggage access and daily activities. Ask whether vehicles can reach the entrance and how far luggage must be carried.

Confirm foreign guest registration, late arrival, checkout, storage and contact details. Lakeside accommodation calls for checks on meals and transport; an old-town base calls for checks on evening conditions. Room views, lifts and heating require the property’s actual response, not assumptions from photographs or brand names.

Days two and three: one lake section and one town area

Use one day for the old town and another for a section of Erhai’s ecological corridor or a checked village such as Xizhou. Establish entrances, open areas and returns. A full lake circuit is not automatically a light half-day. Pauses, photographs and meals can provide meaningful time without adding drives.

Official Dali information describes the corridor’s ecological protection role and management requirements. Follow signs for walking and permitted transport. Do not assume every shore is vehicle-accessible or available for camping and fishing. Check vehicle rental conditions and insurance rather than assuming tourism rentals remove licence requirements.

For less walking, choose an open segment with a clear return point and lawful pickup. Wind, rain, sun and surfaces affect the day. If Cangshan is important, let the mountain replace one day and check current lifts, routes and effort, instead of adding an unconfirmed afternoon ascent.

Day four: compare hotel-to-hotel rail and road travel

Query trains for the actual date or compare a road arrangement. Provincial transport information describes the Dali–Lijiang road relationship, not today’s services or seats. Use 12306 for complete stations and identity instructions. Hotel access, waiting and the arrival connection into town belong in the total time.

For road travel, clarify village stops, waiting, charges and luggage. A stop such as Shaxi changes the transfer and is not automatically included in every journey. Fewer changes may help families or limited mobility, but a private-vehicle label does not establish equipment or child restraints.

Check in before a short Lijiang walk. Ask about the vehicle drop-off, luggage help and distance to an old-town property. Keep the transfer evening flexible. A delay can remove that walk without forcing the missed activity into tomorrow.

Day five: choose a Lijiang area and time to observe

Choose one old-town area for lanes, water channels and architecture, checking admission separately for cultural venues. Walks, museums, courtyards and performances are different products. Accommodation does not include every fee. Respect residents and seek consent for portraits; clothing does not establish someone’s identity.

Compare connections before adding another area such as Shuhe. Staying in one area is also reasonable for a slower trip. Treat performances as selected commercial activities rather than every resident’s daily life. Verify English support for the exact tour or activity.

Day six: select the mountain product and its suitability

Distinguish scenic admission, different cable cars and performances. A snow-mountain ticket does not establish access to every high-level route. Official announcements identify the scenic area’s service mini-programme and purchasing entry point. Check current products, slots and inspection rather than reusing old sale windows or prices. Reservation does not prevent weather disruption.

Passport holders should confirm identity fields, originals, counter or manual checks and transport connections. Different lifts provide different experiences and are not automatically interchangeable. For lower intensity or altitude concerns, discuss personal suitability with an appropriate professional and choose lower activities or omit the mountain. This guide provides no health guarantee.

If tickets or conditions do not work, use the old town, a checked indoor activity or rest rather than another unconfirmed mountain. Snow and visibility depend on the day. A less uncertain final full day also helps prepare luggage and departure transport.

Day seven and common mistakes

Work backwards from the actual airport or station through checkout, luggage, connections and waiting. An early departure is a travel day. For an international connection elsewhere, check separate orders, baggage and buffers. The two-city itinerary does not establish visa-free eligibility; check each traveller against official policy.

Trying to include Shangri-La, Lugu Lake and full Kunming sightseeing while preserving this week’s original activities adds travel and nights. Extend or replace themes. Also avoid confusing admission with a lift ticket or assuming a vehicle reaches every old-town hotel. Write exact product and entrance names before payment.

Questions, weather and who the plan suits

Must I visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain? No; interest, reservation, weather and personal suitability decide. Must I complete Erhai’s corridor? No; this plan selects a manageable section. Should another high mountain replace a rainy day? Check conditions rather than treating it as an automatic safe alternative.

Can English-only visitors book? Save formal names and orders, ask official staff about passport or payment obstacles and confirm language help when needed. This suits time in old towns and by the lake. Intensive climbing, many regions or a very short stop need a different structure.
