The answer: add one theme or give three cities more time
Build a first two-week trip around Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, adding one priority such as Chengdu’s pandas and culture or Guilin and Yangshuo’s rivers and countryside. Alternatively, retain three cities and use extra days for rest, exhibitions and weather swaps. Each destination adds transport, check-in and reservations.
This is a flexible itinerary; confirm reservations and opening conditions for your travel dates. It assumes arrival in Beijing and departure from Shanghai, with both included in fourteen days. A same-city return flight requires its extra journey to be counted. Chengdu and Guilin are alternatives below, not simultaneous additions.
Choose the memory you want to keep
Retain the core cities for imperial history, archaeology and modern urban life. Consider Chengdu for pandas and city pauses, or Guilin and Yangshuo for a countryside contrast. Interest, transport tolerance and real dates decide, not how often a name appears in search results.
Families, older companions and travellers disliking hotel changes should compare three and four bases. For an addition, write the extra journey and nights and identify what it replaces. If nothing is removed, the new theme is taking the buffer. Three cities over fourteen days can support photography, walks and deeper museum visits.

Beijing, days one to four: two priorities and exchangeable dates
Arrive and settle on day one, visit the Palace Museum and surroundings on day two, one Great Wall section on day three, and a city area or garden on day four. The museum currently requires booking and closes on Mondays except statutory holidays. Use real availability and separate the palace from the wall.
Use day four for a swap if earlier reservations or weather change. Choose Mutianyu or Badaling and check transport and facilities separately. More days offer flexibility without guaranteeing popular tickets. Unreserved activities remain provisional.
Xi’an, days five to seven: transfer separately from the Qin museum
Transfer on day five and take an optional short walk after check-in. Use day six for Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum and day seven for the wall area and a cultural activity. The official guide describes the Terracotta Warriors and archaeological park as two areas; choose the scope before allocating Lintong connections and lunch.
Companions can choose fewer galleries and more rest. Check guiding language, coverage and costs. For a day-seven museum, verify the exact location and current reservation. External walks, walls, exhibitions and events have separate conditions; a city product name alone does not establish all are included.
Optional Chengdu, days eight to ten
Transfer and settle on day eight. Focus on Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on day nine, keeping the afternoon flexible. Use day ten for one shrine, museum or neighbourhood theme. Official base tickets do not admit visitors to Dujiangyan Panda Valley, so match the name and location.
Animal behaviour and exhibition areas vary, without promises of a particular panda or cub. For Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan or another excursion, replace day ten and calculate the full return instead of adding everything after pandas. These three calendar days include arrival.
Alternative Guilin and Yangshuo: change the accommodation plan
For this alternative, arrive on day eight and decide whether to stay in Guilin or continue to Yangshuo. Select a real Li River product or road scenery on day nine and suitable countryside or Yulong River time on day ten. Check hubs, piers, luggage and final hotel connections before assigning nights. It is not an automatic same-price replacement for Chengdu orders.
Li River cruises and Yulong activities are separate products. If leaving early on day eleven, reduce distant activities and position the final night accordingly. Travellers wanting slower countryside time can move a day from Beijing or Shanghai instead of enforcing the original three-day allocation.

Shanghai, days eleven to fourteen
Transfer from your chosen theme on day eleven and check in before any short walk. Use day twelve for the Huangpu riverbanks and one view, day thirteen for a neighbourhood or museum, and day fourteen for departure. Verify tower, cruise and exhibition locations separately and include river crossings and building changes.
Work backwards from the actual Pudong or Hongqiao terminal. An early flight leaves no sightseeing that day. Even a late departure needs luggage, transport and airport buffers. If flying internationally from another city, deduct that extra transfer from the fourteen days rather than preserving all Shanghai activities.
Compare rail and air as full journeys
For each transfer, include hotel departure, access to the hub, waiting, transport and arrival connection. Query 12306 for actual dates and full stations with correct identity details. For flights, check terminals, baggage and changes. Running time and flying time are not hotel-to-hotel time.
Do not describe a seamless route before transport is confirmed. Supply and weather can require changing order or reducing activities. Distinguish paid orders, preferences and essential experiences so an adviser can work with actual constraints rather than an undated fixed two-week price.
Entry, passports and booking order
Check each traveller by nationality, document, purpose and actual stay. The complete fourteen-day continuous mainland stay in this example exceeds the 240-hour visa-free transit limit. Use an applicable ordinary visa exemption or visa, or shorten the visit to the authorised period. National Immigration Administration transit rules also specify nationality, documents, ports, permitted areas and onward travel to a third country or region. Familiar city names do not establish eligibility; follow the requirements of the competent authorities.
Resolve international travel and entry first, then cities and nights, major reservations, domestic transport, hotels and smaller activities. Handle passport details, child concessions and railway and attraction procedures separately. Cross-check names, dates, entrances and changes across consecutive orders.
Rain, less walking and quick questions
Keep one daily core activity and allow reductions. Use verified indoor options for rainy walks, following announcements for mountains, water and the wall. For limited stamina, reduce hotel changes and check stairs, toilets and rest points. Vehicles do not establish door access throughout every attraction.
Must I visit four places? No; deeper three-city travel and one additional theme are both options. Can I add both Chengdu and Guilin? Redistribute days and transport, usually removing other content or extending the trip. Can this full fourteen-day stay use 240-hour visa-free transit? No; it exceeds that limit. Choose an applicable ordinary visa exemption or visa, or shorten the stay to the authorised period.
This suits a first introduction with clear priorities. More regions or intensive outdoor trips need a separate theme. Sources were checked on 4 October 2026. Decide the base count, added interest and departure hub before details; actual bookability remains to be confirmed.
